Elbert King
The Selfless ManElbert King was a farm boy from Greene County. He enlisted into the Marine Corps in December of 1942. While in battle in Okinawa, Japan, he threw himself on top of an enemy grenade in order to save the lives of his fellow men. He is remembered today through a park named after him, and also the U.S. Marine Base at Okinawa is named "Camp Kinser."
